Saharan Dust Could Affect Air Quality in Arkansas

NORTH LITTLE ROCK — Saharan dust has been carried by winds across the Atlantic Ocean from the Sahara Desert and is affecting southern states, including Arkansas. The dust is affecting air quality today and will possibly affect air quality on Friday. We will continue to monitor air quality and provide additional information as needed.

According to the CDC, Saharan dust transported to the U.S. is normal, especially from late June to mid-August. Saharan dust may cause hazy skies, low air quality, and possible allergy symptoms. If you have any underlying respiratory conditions, you may want to limit prolonged outdoor exertion. The dust may also cause skin and eye irritation.
